Discord vs Gratonite: An Honest Feature Comparison

A side-by-side comparison of Discord vs Gratonite covering pricing, privacy, voice, community features, and more. We're honest about where each platform wins.

By Gratonite Team

A fair comparison

We built Gratonite as an alternative to Discord, so it's only fair to compare them honestly. Discord has a decade head start and hundreds of millions of users. We're not going to pretend we match them on everything.

But there are areas where we think we've built something genuinely better. Here's the breakdown.

Pricing

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Free tier | Yes, with limitations | Yes, no limitations | | Premium | Nitro ($9.99/mo) or Nitro Basic ($2.99/mo) | None — everything is free | | Upload limit (free) | 25 MB | No artificial limit | | Custom emoji | Nitro for global use | Free everywhere | | HD streaming | Nitro only | Free |

Our take: Discord's free tier is usable, but increasingly nudges you toward Nitro. Gratonite has no premium tier because we don't think community features should be gated by a subscription.

Winner: Gratonite

Privacy

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Data collection | Extensive (messages, voice metadata, device info, usage patterns) | Minimal (only what's needed to deliver messages) | | Data sharing | Shared with partners per privacy policy | No third-party data sharing | | Phone verification | Required for many servers | Never required | | Ad targeting | Yes (Quests, promoted content) | No ads, no targeting | | Open source | No | Yes — code is on GitHub |

Our take: This is the area where the gap is widest. Discord is an ad-supported platform that monetizes user data. Gratonite collects as little as possible and shares nothing.

Winner: Gratonite

Voice chat

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Basic voice | Solid, reliable | Solid, reliable | | Spatial audio | No | Yes — 3D positioned voices | | Screen sharing | Yes (HD with Nitro) | Yes | | Noise suppression | Yes (Krisp integration) | Yes | | Stage channels | Yes | Coming soon |

Our take: Discord's voice is mature and reliable. Gratonite matches the fundamentals and adds spatial voice, which genuinely changes how group conversations feel. If you've never tried spatial audio in a voice channel, it's worth experiencing.

Winner: Tie — Discord for maturity, Gratonite for spatial innovation

Text chat

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Channels & categories | Yes | Yes | | Threads | Yes | Yes (nested) | | Message search | Yes | Yes | | Markdown formatting | Yes | Yes | | Embeds & rich content | Yes | Yes | | Message editing & deletion | Yes | Yes |

Our take: Text chat is largely at parity. Both platforms handle the fundamentals well. Discord has more years of polish on edge cases like link previews and embed formatting.

Winner: Tie

Community features

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Roles & permissions | Deep, granular | Deep, granular | | Cosmetics | Nitro-only (profile effects, avatars) | User-created marketplace | | Auction house / economy | No | Built-in | | Server discovery | Yes | Yes | | Onboarding flows | Yes | Yes | | Events & scheduling | Yes | Coming soon |

Our take: Discord has a mature permissions system and server discovery. Gratonite matches on roles and permissions, and adds a community economy with cosmetics and an auction house that Discord doesn't offer. The cosmetics marketplace means communities can create and trade items — not just buy them from the platform.

Winner: Gratonite for unique features, Discord for ecosystem breadth

Moderation

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Banning & kicking | Yes | Yes | | Timeouts | Yes | Yes | | AutoMod | Yes (built-in) | Yes (built-in) | | Audit log | Yes | Yes | | Bulk message deletion | Yes | Yes | | Third-party mod bots | Huge ecosystem | Growing |

Our take: Discord's moderation ecosystem is massive, with hundreds of third-party bots. Gratonite covers the built-in fundamentals — bans, timeouts, automod, audit logs, bulk deletion — but the bot ecosystem is still developing.

Winner: Discord (ecosystem size)

Integrations & bots

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Bot ecosystem | Enormous (thousands of bots) | Early stage | | Webhooks | Yes | Yes | | API access | Yes | Yes | | Spotify/game status | Yes | Coming soon |

Our take: This is Discord's biggest advantage. A decade of developer ecosystem is hard to replicate. Gratonite has webhooks and API access, but the catalog of ready-made bots is small. If your workflow depends on specific Discord bots, check if an equivalent exists before switching.

Winner: Discord

Mobile support

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | iOS app | Yes, mature | Yes | | Android app | Yes, mature | Yes | | Feature parity | High | Growing |

Our take: Discord's mobile apps are polished after years of iteration. Gratonite has mobile apps on both platforms, with feature parity improving every release.

Winner: Discord (maturity)

Open source

| | Discord | Gratonite | |---|---|---| | Source code available | No | Yes | | Community contributions | No | Yes | | Self-hosting | No | Possible | | Transparency | Privacy policy only | Code is the proof |

Our take: If open source matters to you, this isn't close. Gratonite's code is on GitHub. Discord is a black box.

Winner: Gratonite

The bottom line

Choose Discord if: You need the largest possible community, rely on specific bots, or value the polish of a decade-old platform.

Choose Gratonite if: You care about privacy, want spatial voice, like the idea of community-created economies, or simply don't want to pay for features that should be free.

We're not trying to kill Discord. We're building an alternative for people who want something different. If that sounds like you — try Gratonite. It's free, and you don't even need a phone number.
